December 25, 2017, a 7-year-old, autistic boy, Paul Kevin Rozier III, lost his life on property owned by Hanalani Schools. A private, Christian, k-12 academy located directly next to the main Hanalani campus in Mililani. The property has a pool, that had no cover, no markings that dictated depths, and was full even though the property was vacant. The owner/headmaster/direct descendent of the founder, Mark Sugimoto, was recently released from personal liability. The judge presiding, in this case, deemed that Sugimoto was acting on behalf of the school so he cannot be held personally liable. 

Since the death, in 2017, there have been no changes to the property. The fence still allows the pool to be visible as far as the street. There is still a large space on the side of the fence as well. This property is located next to the main school campus, next to their Kindergarten school. 

The U.S DOE State Regulations of Private Schools says "in Hawaii, a school must meet the following requirements: ―The school shall maintain physical facilities, playgrounds, equipment, and materials of sufficient quality and quantity to support the program of the school. The school shall comply with applicable health, fire, safety, and sanitary standards.‖ Hawaii Council of Private Schools, ―Standards and Procedures for the Approval of Hawaii Private Schools, 1996.‖"

Number 10 of the listed 11 "Conditions of Eligibility For the HCPS License" is "Have developed and implemented a plan to ensure the physical safety and cybersecurity needs of all students, faculty, staff, and school data." 

Hanalani Schools should no longer retain their licensure and accreditation with the Hawaii Council of Private Schools or Hawaii Accreditation. It gives parents a realistic idea of what kind of organization they are spending thousands of dollars to send their children to. A school that won't bother to protect their children from injury but will gladly take their money. They should no longer be allowed to serve the community when it has been made abundantly clear they don't actually care about it. In addition, Mark Sugimoto needs to resign as Headmaster and remove himself from the Board of Trustees. If these are the kinds of decisions the headmaster makes, he doesn't deserve to be molding the minds of youth.
