United States District Court Northern District of Ohio

ATTN: Honorable Judge Jeffrey Helmick

We, the undersigned, implore you, Honorable Judge Jeffrey Helmick, to release Ibrahim Zubair Mohammad on bond to his wife and 4 young children in Toledo, Ohio and allow him to try to restore normalcy and love in his family's life while he awaits his day in court. His continued detainment is a violation of his right to due process and amounts to punishment without cause.

Prolonged Detainment without Trial:

Ibrahim Mohammad has been sitting in a jail cell in the Lucas County Correction Center for 2 years awaiting trial.  His trial has been postponed 4 times, the judge has been changed three times, and he has been denied bond twice.  He cannot go outside nor does he have any access to sunlight.  He sees his wife and children through a fuzzy television screen several floors away from them for 30 minutes a week. He has not been convicted of any crime yet he is being punished as if he is assumed to be guilty until proven innocent.

Background:

Ibrahim was born in India in 1979 and came to the United States in 2001 in order to pursue his education.  He obtained his Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois in 2004. He met his wife, Umaima Jafri, a U.S. Citizen, in 2006 through mutual friends and moved to Toledo to begin their new life. He began working at a local engineering consulting firm, where he gained a professional engineering license and excelled in his job due to his abilities and strong work ethic. He became a lawful permanent resident in 2007. In 2011, Ibrahim's house was raided by federal agents.  He heard nothing for 4 years after cooperating with them. Meanwhile, he accepted a better job with a successful engineering firm in Dallas, Texas where he lived with Jafri and their 4 children. Then in November 2015, law enforcement agents showed up at their home and arrested a bewildered and confused Ibrahim, accusing him of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists.

 Facts:

The government is accusing Ibrahim and 3 other defendants of a thought crime.  The government admits in written court documents that there are no "smoking guns" in this case that tie Ibrahim to any of the plots and allegations they accuse him of.  Rather they attempt to spin a convoluted series of "circumstantial evidences" to try to prove that A leads to B, which must mean C, and therefore D. According to Ibrahim's lawyer, David Klucas, "This is not a particularly compelling case for the Government. A review of the evidence disclosed to date fails to reveal Mohammad espousing any of the tenets of terrorism or condoning any terrorist acts. He has never expressed any hatred of or desire to harm the United States. This case is an example of the current atmosphere of suspicion and hostility to all things Islam. Let the Government present its case. Everyone deserves due process no matter their color or creed.”

Their "evidence" consists of misquoting and twisting commonly used Islamic phrases to try to vilify Ibrahim and show a connection that was never there.  Their evidence comes from FISA monitoring, which is highly controversial and questionably unconstitutional.

Call to Action:

Ibrahim is a strong family man and a pillar of every community he has been a part of.  Ibrahim is you and I.  They did it to many before him, and they will continue to do it to many after if we do not unite against these types of witch hunts.  Please sign the petition below to Free Ibrahim NOW and give him his day in court.
