On Monday, Oct 29, 2012 during the night of Hurricane Sandy (at approximately 11:00-11:30pm) Filmmaker David Mims was filming events of the storm for a documentary, and to submit segments to news stations. During the course of filming at 102st and 1st Avenue in New York City, officers from the NYPD intervened on David while he was filming. The officers began beating and brutalizing Mr. Mims. Pedestrians watched him helplessly being beaten by several officers of the 23rd precinct while he was handcuffed. Shortly after, charges of assaulting an officer were bought against David Mims as Mr. Mims was handcuffed, the charges were bought against Mr. Mims to cover up the police brutality.
Along with being a film producer David Mims is well known in his community as a productive and contributing citizen; from being in the social service field helping the homeless in the city, to teaching, and mentoring the youth, Mr. Mims work is highly respected and his contributions has not gone unnoticed by many prominent members of the community. The DA is threatening Mr. Mims with a felony conviction and prison time if he continues to fight the NYPD through trial. Mr. Mims needs the charge of assaulting an officer to be dropped to continue the process against the officers who violated his civil rights, and abused him in order for them to be disciplined for their actions against him on the night of October 29, 2012.
An innocent man freedom, and life is about to be taken away due to the recklessness, and negligence of the NYPD 23rd precinct. The officers who beaten him, violated his civil, and human rights needs to be disciplined for their actions.
