Justice For Elena

Recently a troubled young woman, Elena Frantzis, was found dead in her apartment. She had suffered sexual abuse from her adopted father since the age of 4. This man was Father Stylianos, a priest in the Orthodox Church. When she was 10 she tried reporting it but no one believed her. The abuse continued for several more years until she finally managed to get her case heard in court. The priest received a mere 2 year sentence and served 18 months. When released he was reinstated in the church. This lack of justice drove Elena to her death. The church is now going to remove Father Stylianos but this is far too little, far too late. Elena's case is not an isolated incident and child abuse by clergy is a well known and ongoing issue. For this to stop proper justice needs to be served. Child abuse is abhorrent, inexcusable and illegal. If a member of the public had done what Father Stylianos did they would have received a much harsher sentence. I call for proper justice to be served to Father Stylianos and to those who covered for him. I also call for a thorough and impartial investigation of the church so as to purge it of disgusting practises like this and to send a clear message that no one is above the law, regardless of their beliefs or profession, especially when it comes to the well being of children. Churches worldwide, supposedly institutions of moral values, have gotten away with too much for too long, and this could set a long overdue precedent that hopefully others might follow.
