As an ethnically Chinese person, the case of Dr. David Dao from Kentucky, who was violently and forcibly removed from his seat after boarding United Airlines Express Flight 3411 deeply troubles me.
After overselling flight tickets and getting all passengers onboard the plane, United Airlines was required to re-accommodate four passengers to make room for their own staff. When Dr. Dao refused to give up his seat he was dragged through the aisle of the airplane by three law enforcement officers. A video taken by one of the passengers showed his head being bashed on the arm rest leaving his lip badly bruised and blood streaming down his face. As he ran back into the plane distraught saying he wanted to go home he expressed that he was a doctor and had patients to see and thus could not miss his flight. Dr. Dao believed he was being racially profiled and said, "Why are you asking me?"
I am of the opinion that it is unjust and unreasonable for a passenger to be removed under duress after they have already paid for their flight and sat down in their allocated seat. I also find it absurd that United Airlines did not address the seating situation with the passengers before allowing anyone to board the flight. They should have also asked other passengers instead of forcibly removing Dr. Dao after he expressly refused to disembark the airplane.
I call on Richard Blumenthal, Senator and attorney serving on both the Aviation Operations and the Consumer Protections Subcommittee in the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation to bring the three law enforcement officers to account, determine whether United Airlines is liable for damages for causing distress and personal injury to Dr. Dao by forcibly removing him from his seat and why United did not offer full compensation to Dr. Dao when trying to get him to give up his seat.
I further call upon members of the public to clarify with United Airlines about their policies before booking their services or alternatively boycott United Airlines flights until Dr. Dao is duly compensated and the case is resolved.
Please, sign this petition if you believe this case should be taken up by the Senate as White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has already expressed President Trump will not be addressing this issue due to prejudicing the case outcome.
