Why this petition matters

Started by Thomas Murphy

ALS is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease that targets muscles, causing increased paralysis over time. ALS is fatal, and those affected with it typically only live for 2-5 years. I am creating this petition to support a piece of legislation that gives justice to the spouses of veterans that suffer from ALS.

As ALS is a disease whose treatment is very costly and time-consuming, the spouses of veterans deserve compensation to help support them in their time of need. Despite this, the current Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) for the spouses of veterans is only applicable if the veteran suffered paralysis for 8 years or more. By then, most people suffering from ALS would have already died. The H.R. 5607, Justice for ALS Veterans Act of 2021 would extend this compensation to all veterans and their spouses that suffered from ALS, regardless of the time they had the disease.
