Roxanne Veinotte and Mathew Mawson of Ottawa have been charged with two counts of animal cruelty for imprisoning a pot-bellied pig in their basement in Vanier. The pig suffered all of its life from extreme pain due to hooves that had grown one and half feet long, curling into the bottom of its feet. The crippled pig was kept in a dim basement and only given food and water when the owners remembered. A decision was made by a veterinarian to euthanize the pig because of suffering, pain, and permanent damage to its feet and joints. "This is both heartbreaking and outrageous," said Miriam Smith, an Ottawa Humane Society RIS Inspector. "It’s difficult to believe that no one other than this couple and her son knew about the pig and that they permitted this terrible negligence to continue for so many years."
Pigs are considered to be the most intelligent domestic animal. Pigs rank #4 in animal intelligence behind chimpanzees, dolphins and elephants. Scientific studies show that they have better cognitive/problem solving skills and memory than a three year old child. They also feel remorse, empathy, affection, and many other emotions They have a sense of humour and a sense of self. Click here to learn more about the intelligence of pigs.
The extreme negligence and cruelty inflicted on this pot-bellied pig is evidence that this man and woman must receive the maximum penalty for this crime - each face a $60,000 fine and two years in jail.
We support the maximum sentence for the charges of animal cruelty and respectfully request that the Provincial Prosecutor and Presiding Justice does the same. We also request that the two people charged are prohibited from owning pets for the rest of their lives. As a province in the top tier for animal protection laws, Ontario needs to send a message that the cruel torture and abuse of animals will not be tolerated.
