Why this petition matters

Started by Ruth Vassallo

Everyone gets LESS than MINIMUM WAGE per day NO EXCEPTIONS

  • If your employer can’t pay your normal rate then EVEN IF you are e.g a single mum / recent graduate renting in london searching for jobs you get less than minimum wage

Unemployed get NOTHING

  • I was a recent graduate and had ONLY JUST got a job before jury service - what about the people who have just finished school / been made redundant with BILLS TO PAY and CHILDREN TO FEED?

If you are earning 300 pounds a day (well done you btw) you still earn 64.95 per day

From my experience - IF YOU ARE NOT NEEDED DURING THE DAY YOU MUST STAY ‘JUST IN CASE’ so no, you can’t go to work you must sit there and ‘wait’

Jury service is COMPULSORY despite LESS THAN MINIMUM WAGE

You could be fined up to £1000 if you fail to attend

Facts:

How much do you get? (all taken from gov.uk)

For the first 10 days of jury service, you can claim up to:

  • £64.95 a day if you spend more than 4 hours at court
  • £32.47 a day if you spend 4 hours or less at court
  • (bare in mind not all employers let employees back to work for half a day- it’s literally part of the form your work has to fill out for you)

COMPARE (8hr working day rate)

  • London living wage  £88.40
  • National living wage £76

Expenses

Food

Up to and including 10 hours a day £5.71 per day

Transport

Covered (within reason, so no taxis or limos- see gov.uk)

THE BASIC CHANGE THAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN

People should be PAID MINIMUM WAGE AT LEAST or is that asking for too much?
