Junior High Arts Core Education for Northeast Edmonton Students

Arts Core Education infuses the teaching and learning of core subjects with the creativity and expression of art, music, drama, and dance. Experiencing and using the arts in connection with linguistic, mathematic, scientific and other kinds of learning, students are enabled to holistically reach their full academic potential. Arts Core Education engages students with a wide variety of learning styles (spatial, musical, interpersonal, physical, etc..), and access to artistic expression enriches and enhances each child’s educational experience.

Junior high schools face to challenge of encouraging and increasing student commitment to lifelong learning, and in order to assist in this goal some junior high schools have chosen to target interested groups with specialized programming, such as soccer academies, or laptop classrooms. While some programs evaluate applicants based academic achievement, try outs, or portfolios, an Arts Core junior high would provide equal access to arts education for all interested students.

Additionally, Mount Royal Arts Core and Virginia Park Arts Core elementary school students do not have an equal access Arts Core junior high school in northeast Edmonton, thus the continuity of Arts Core Education in to students’ teenage years is lost.

We encourage all students, parents, and community members to support the formation of an Arts Core Junior High by petitioning the Edmonton Public School Board to reach this goal by September 2014.
