Residence  students of Awami place @Durban University  of  technology have been facing  challenges regarding online learning due many unattended issues mainly the lack of wifi. When students  tried to voice out their challenges they were brutalized by the police, got arrested and their fingerprints  and details  were taken. They also lost their belongings in the process(this includes learning  devices)

During the process of the arrest they sprayed  pepper spray in the van and pushed the students  inside. female students  were half naked and sprayed with water during the arrest.

47 student were arrested in total, 15 girls and 33 boys. This incident  happened  on Friday  the 27th of November. 45 were released  the following  morning  and 2 where left behind as they claimed they were kept for  more investigations. All these students  were forced to walk 10km back to their residence barefoot and half naked. The remaining  two were chargerd and appeared at the court of law on Monday 30th November.

When students  and the SRC of the DUT tried to open a case against  this, the station  captain denied  them that right.

Ever since this incident, most students are traumatized  and  dont feel safe within the residence. No counseling  or medical attention offered and one seems to care about this issue hence this petition, we need justice  to be served as this has affected their academic exams. Everything has moved online yet they are denied  access by the landlord. Most students  have failed to submit  their school work nor write their exams online due to the lack of wifi and currently  the situation  has escalated  due to lost devices.

Please  intervene, as the students of this residence  have been wronged and no one is willing to listen.
