Somerfield Needs Our Bus Service back!

This petition made change with 56 supporters!

Many of our Somerfield Residents need an adequate bus service route to be reinstated down Somerfield Street and Selwyn Street. Prior to the bus services & bus stops being removed within the last year -many residents made submissions & appeals to save our bus service with no effect or response at all. The lack of an adequate, local bus service is affecting our residents more than ever with our City being rebuilt and with many of The Princess Margaret Hospital services being moved to Christchurch and Burwood Hospitals.

This petition is an urgent request to reinstate an adequate bus service in Somerfield and Selwyn Streets. This may be achieved by suggestion of a New red mini bus or either of these proposed options:

Option 1) To amend existing bus service route No: 60 to include Barrington, Somerfield, and Selwyn Streets. (by turning right into Milton St instead of turning left into Milton Street.) - Minimal intervention / change maybe required.

Option 2) To create a New Hospital-Based Bus Service Route -on ONE bus via Somerfield & Selwyn Streets, while linking all our 3 public hospitals! (The Princess Margaret Hospital, CHCH Hospital & Burwood Hospital). This newly proposed route via Somerfield may include many advantages & new stops for our residents city wide - open to negotiation in some areas (see proposed map).

Both options will improve accessibility for our residents (particularly for our growing elderly population & young families) & will reduce walking distances to our nearest bus stop. This will enable our community greater opportunities to commute & enjoy our City areas & new health care facilities. For instance our elderly residents, families & Cashmere High School Students often need to walk 1.5km to reach their nearest bus stop in order to get to the City or CHCH Hospital. Many residents feel isolated in their homes if they are unable to drive.

An adequate bus service is essential for our community to feel connected with these services & other areas of our growing city. Somerfield area includes at least 3 local public schools, 4 pre-schools, 2 Rest homes, 2 churches & many businesses, shops & restaurants - requiring an improved transport system.

Somerfield Residents Association (SRA) keenly supports our local residents' concerns. Therefore this petition will be forwarded by SRA & other local residents to appropriate ECan members, our Community Board, City Councillors, CDHB Staff, & The Greater CHCH Public Transport Joint Committee (along with any one else who may be appropriate for creating positive change for our area effectively).

A paper copy of this petition will be available to be signed by residents unable to access a computer. We have residents offering to bring this petition to local residents! Please feel free to share this petition to anyone else who may be affected by these lack of bus services.

Thank you for supporting this petition & we will ensure to keep you informed of any progress or decisions made by the authorities concerned.
