Safety For All on Public Transport:
We are working towards safety for everyone on public transport. Currently it is unsafe for persons in wheelchairs (and carers) to travel on public transport busses in Australia. The wheelchairs have no way to be stabilised or anchored on the busses, this causes the wheelchairs to slid across the bus of which creates a dangerous situation for all travellers. Wheelchairs can topple onto other travellers or slide into them, wheelchairs are mostly made of heavy duty metal and can cause a lot of damage and injure not only to other people but also the wheelchair user then selves and the interior of the busses. We wish to push to change the safety standard laws that are currently in place by the Australian Federal Government , and wish to add additions straps or anchors to all public transport busses so the wheelchairs can be secured properly and prevent sliding, injury and damage.
This petition of citizens of Australia draws to the attention of the house.
That the Australian Design Rules and Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989, with particular reference to Australian Standard AS/NZS 10542. 1:2009, do not adequately address access issues and safety for wheelchair users travelling on busses.
we therefore ask the house to:
facilitate changed to Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule 68/00 -Occupant Impact Protection in Busses) 2006 and Vehicle Standard ( Australian Design Rule 58/00 - Requirements of Omnibuses Designed for Hire and Reward) 2006 to improve access to the safety for wheelchair users on busses including provision for anchorage.
