Don't change the current Florida DOC visitation schedule

The state of Florida Department of Corrections has decided to change the inmate visitation schedule at all institutions. Currently inmates can receive visits from loved ones every weekend. In an attempt to decrease the amount of contraband being brought into the prison system, Deputy Secretary Rick Dixon is initiating a new schedule starting April 7, 2018, in which inmates will only be allowed biweewkly visits. This new visitation schedule is unfair to the family members who rely on the current system's flexiblity to be able to see their loved ones. People who have to do shift work on weekends, those who live far away, and those who have to rely on the generosity of others for transportation are just a few family members who will be negatively affected by this policy change. It is also penalizing the inmates who follow the rules because it eliminates the one thing that so many of them have to look forward to. Incarceration creates challenges in establishing and maintaining healthy parent-child relationships. Reducing the time inmates can spend with their children is not beneficial to anyone. There are numerous documented studies that prove that the more visits prisoners receive, the lower their chances of re-offending after release are. Despite this evidence-based information, institutions continue to view visitation as a privilege, and not as a tool to help inmates establish themselves as law-abiding citizens when they are released. Please sign this petition to let Florida Department of Corrections Secretary, Julie Jones know that we don't think it's fair to punish the many for the crimes of the few. There is no guarantee that reducing the times inmates can see their loved ones will solve the contraband problem. We do not want biweekly inmate visitation, and we need to continue seeing our loved ones every weekend.
