Australian asylum for Rahaf Alqunun
This petition had 172 supporters
18 year old Rahaf Alqunun is currently in the custody of Thai immigration officials after having her passport seized at Bangkok airport. She was attempting to flee to Australia from Saudi Arabia after rejecting Islam which is considered a serious crime in Saudi Arabia which can be punishable by death. Rahaf fears that if she is deported back to Saudi Arabia that this will be her fate. She managed to escape from her family while on a trip to Kuwait and was on her way to Australia with a layover in Thailand. Upon arrival in Thailand, Saudi officials confiscated her passport and other paperwork that would allow her passage into Australia. She spent a day in an airport hotel, barricading herself in before she could finally speak with UN humanitarian officials and is currently still with them. Her future remains unknown at this point. If she is forced to return to Saudi Arabia, her fears that she will face the death penalty could very much become a reality. By signing this petition, you are showing the Australian government that you believe Rahaf has the right to be given asylum in Australia and no longer fear that her life is in danger for making a personal decision to not abide by the rules of this authoritarian regime and religion.
