We are starting this petition to see if you're experiencing the same problems with excessive and speeding traffic on your street in Falmouth. If you share this concern then please consider signing on to this petition to join with us in urging the Town to increase the use of measures that will make our neighborhood streets safer.
My neighbors and I started the Falmouth Safe Streets Alliance to provide the Town with the public support needed to reduce excessive cut-thru traffic volume and speeding on neighborhood streets. Research from elsewhere in the U.S. has shown that pedestrian and cyclist injuries are higher on neighborhood streets when compared to main roads. Cut-thru traffic is a large part of the reason why. Cut-thru traffic operates at a significantly higher speed. As speed increases so does the likelihood of accidents and severe injury. A child struck by a vehicle traveling at 30 mph is six times more likely to die compared to 20 mph.
Various traffic calming measures have reduced cut-thru traffic and injuries by up to 60%. Unfortunately, Falmouth officials has been reluctant thus far to apply these measures to our neighborhood streets. We believe that a demonstration of widespread public support will provide the Town with what they need to act on this urgent issue.
