Lights Needed on Kingfisher Drive at Crosswalk (East of Flamingo Crescent)

The crosswalk behind Westwind Elementary School on Kingfisher Drive (east of Flamingo Crescent) has high traffic volume, speeding cars and is right after a windy part of the road.

Children and families use this crosswalk every day to get to and from the school, as well as many residents who use it to connect to the adjacent community path leading to Moncton or to the school path to walk the track or walk their dog. Drivers come speeding around the corner and have almost hit pedestrians on the crosswalk.  Recently, a family was crossing at the crosswalk and the first car stopped to let them cross, but the car behind that one went around the stopped car, into the opposite lane and almost hit the pedestrians.

This is becoming a very dangerous crosswalk, and it will only become even busier and more dangerous when the scheduled road work begins on No. 2 Road, causing Kingfisher Drive to become an unofficial detour for north/south traffic.

Lights and wide speed bumps are needed at this busy crosswalk.  The City of Richmond should also consider extending the school zone to include this area of Kingfisher Drive, with more school zone signs and a lower, posted speed limit.  Signs that there is a crosswalk ahead should be placed well in advance of the crosswalk in both directions, so that drivers will slow down ahead of time.  We, the concerned citizens of Richmond, ask that the City of Richmond address this need immediately before a tragedy occurs.
