Personal story
Dear Hon. Thomas M. Durkin,
By this time, you must already be inundated with numerous emails and letters from all over the world with pleas for leniency in behalf of our friend and sister, Jessica O’ Brien. This is simply another character reference hoping to be the tipping point with which we hope to paint a better picture of who Jessica truly is.
Although largely blind to the specifics of the case, we would like for you to see Jessica through our eyes. To us, her sisters from St. Theresa’s College in Cebu, Philippines, she was nothing short of a heroine. Her meteoric rise from her humble beginnings in a third world country was the stuff of legends. She is simply our pride and joy. She could have just opted to practice Law in the Phiippines while raising her three young daughters (Samantha Theresa,
21, Judy Rose, 15 and Vanessa Kate, 12) but she chose to get out of her comfort zone to serve the public. She bravely chose to bear the torch for other women in her field, as clearly defined in her years of volunteerism in the Women’s Bar. Two years ago, some of our batchmates had dinner with her during one of their business trips in Chicago and they must have been interrupted at least four times by total strangers who needed her advice or tangible help. Not once did Jessica bat an eye and was painstakingly gracious to each one who approached her. That is the kind of person she is…the kind who would easily give the shirt off her back. We wish we had enough space and time to ply you with more stories of her compassion and kindness.
As her sentencing approaches on December 20, we hope to convey to you that we know the real person behind her public façade. We are all collectively asking for a measure of urmost understanding and mercy where incarceration is not in her future and she will be afforded the chance to raise her daughters. Despite this lapse of judgement from years ago, her humility and sincerity still shines through in these dark times. And yes, she truly remains a heroine in our eyes.
Very sincerely,
Jessica O'Brien's Sisters from St. Theresa’s College Batch 1984
