Judge Garcia and Mayor Darling: Resist Trump's Border Wall
0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!
Hidalgo County Judge Ramon Garcia and McAllen Mayor Jim Darling have both written letters asking the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to build Trump's border walls into Hidalgo County's flood-control levees. They claim that by collaborating with DHS in the construction of 30 miles of combination levee-border wall Hidalgo county will get the federal government to pay for levee repairs.
But all of these levees have either already been repaired or are in the process of being repaired. The work on the levees was paid for by the federal economic stimulus package of 2009. So the levee-border walls that Judge Garcia and Mayor Darling are proposing are not needed to protect us from floods.
What they will do is wall off private property, cutting off access for farmers and other landowners. They will also wall off Hidalgo County's most visited nature parks, Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge and Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park.
We call upon Judge Garcia and Mayor Darling to withdraw their offer to help build Trump's border wall, and to instead work with Hidalgo County residents to stop the walls and the damage they will inflict.
