My name is Enrico Miguel Thomas and I am a successful and well known artist in New York but it does not matter who you are in this instance. This is much bigger than me because it is about our constitutional rights! While I was working on a drawing at Grand Central I was falsely accused of criminal activity for allegedly leaving a bag unattended. I was only seeking a better vantage point, when in a very short time I was being interrogated as well as my belongings being searched by the MTA police. In no way was a crime committed, but an officer by the name of P.O. King accused me of disorderly conduct. In the New York Times from May 14th, 2013, Eugene O'Donnell, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and former Police Officer and prosecutor, stated that "the disorderly conduct violation covered a broad swath of conditions, which made it a handy tool for officers to cite people who were not technically breaking other specific laws. He also stated that, " It's the most abused statute in America".
It is my sincere hope that my petition is supported so that this kind of thing does not continue to happen to other innocent people. Abuse of Disorderly Conduct laws very often subject low income and impoverished youth who do not have access to good legal representation, to false and corrupt legal prosecution. Here is the New York Times article from May 14th, 2013:
