Asking for leniency in the sentencing of Guy Philippe

This petition had 316 supporters

Dear Judge M. Altonaga,

We the people of Grand'Anse Haiti petition the court for leniency in the sentencing of Senator-elect Guy Philippe. We would ask the court to consider probation. We feel that the criminal charges, the extradition to the United States, the months already spent in confinement and the negative publicity surrounding his case are punishment enough, and that it serves no purpose to Mr. Philippe, nor to the general public to incarcerate him for any amount of time. Mr. Philippe is a productive member of our society; a leader in our community; a duly elected official which our entire region is relying upon for his tenacious leadership.

The Grand'Anse department is one of the most neglected territories in Haiti. A department still crippled by the 2010 earthquake; more recently was hit severely by hurricane Mathew in 2016. We overwhelmingly voted for Mr. Guy Philippe because we strongly believe that he is the only representative who can effectively overcome the bureaucracy in Port-au-Prince and bring much needed change to our region. As the Haitian community grapples with the eventual deportation of more than 50,000+ people who benefited from the temporary protective status program (TPS), Haiti is in dire need of all its leaders including Senator-elect Guy Philippe; without whom the Haitian Parliament is incomplete. We need Senator Guy Philippe back in Haiti, he may not be perfect but to many of us in the Grand’Anse, he is our only hope.

They say that America is the land of redemption, rebirth and reinvention, a place of second chances; we the people remain hopeful. It is in this spirit, we the undersigned individuals and organizations wrote this petition to ask for leniency in the sentencing of Senator-elect Guy Philippe. We appreciate the responsibility that you have. We understand the complexity of sentencing. We ask that you utilize your power to have mercy on Mr. Philippe and ensure that he returns to Haiti safely, so that he can continue serving his people. Now more than ever, Haiti needs Mr. Guy Philippe.

Thank you so very much for your consideration and attention.
