End Unconventional School Policies Towards Male & Female Students, FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION!

Dear people of change,

Pasadena Memorial High School enforces policies that restrict their students’ self-expression. Girls are able to wear traditional piercings such as earrings, while boys aren’t allowed any sort of piercings on school grounds. Non-traditional piercings, (nose, lip, eyebrow, etc.), are prohibited to be worn by both sexes. Regulations toward young adolescent males on grooming are also outrageous! Facial hair is natural throughout adolescence, so to be under submission in the early ongoing stages for young males implicates how the school system is hesitant towards change. Dress code is inefficient with the fact that both sexes are not to wear shorts, even in the smoldering hot climate of Texas! Young women are prohibited to wear clothing that is too “revealing”, such as spaghetti straps/or dresses no higher than 2 inches above the knee! These policies restrict scholars from expressing themselves whether through fashion, jewelry, etc.

In conclusion, students should be able to feel comfortable in their own skin, especially in high school where they decide the direction they may take in life, so I hope you consider this as you decide whether you are for change, or against it.

Thank you.

                                                                                                         -Sincerely,

                                                                                          Hernando J. Ortiz
