Demand Scrutiny For New Hope's Colton Coal Mine

This petition had 1,883 supporters

The Queensland Government recently authorised mining leases for New Hope Coal Group for their Colton Coal Mine.

Due to its proximity to environmentally sensitive waters of the Mary River, The Great Sandy Strait and World Heritage Listed Fraser Island, we urge Josh Frydenberg accept the request for re-assessment.

This mine has not produced an Environmental Impact Statement.

This mine will not be required to monitor discharges of its pit water, nor will waters downstream be monitored.

This mine will not be required to rehabilitate the void it leaves behind.

This mine is close to the community of Aldershot, (2.14 km) who rely largely upon rainwater for their existance, which may be contaminated by coal dust.

This mine will be the first large open cut coal mine to be located on an estuarine river. New Hope based their modelling on the Fitzroy River, an ephemeral river (Not tidal).

The New Hope Coal Group consider themselves good corporate citizens who are concerned about the communities they operate alongside. Why then are they evading proper scrutiny of their mining operations?

Please sign this petition urging Josh Frydenberg - the Minister for the Environment - to reassess this mining proposal according to federal environmental law.
