It has been exceedingly obvious that the baby formula crisis in Australia has been persistent in the last couple of years. This has left many Australian mothers without adequate supply for their babies. Most of us are frustrated and feel helpless about the shortage of formula caused by Chinese “daigous” sending OUR formula to China. As a result, Australian mothers are forced to go searching for baby formula at different stores, and often cannot access the formula their babies need. For many mothers who are unable to breastfeed, they rely solely on formula to keep their babies nourished. Looking after and caring for an infant is stressful enough without worrying about the supply of formula.

Mothers have been told if they are not able to purchase formula from supermarket shelves to contact the manager of the store. However, I have personally found this to be unfruitful. I once had to call every Coles, Woolworths, and chemist in a 10km radius of where I live to hunt for the formula my baby was on. Fortunately, I eventually did find a chemist that had stock.

There have been news reports of violence to staff by the Chinese daigous. Media and videos from the public show daigous blatantly breaking the rule of 2 cans per transaction by making multiple visits to the same store. As a result, they clear entire shelves of formula.

Not only are these Chinese daigous unethical by charging exorbitant fees selling our precious limited baby formula in China, they’re earning an income from our Australian baby formula and evading paying tax on the profits!

I am urging you to step in for Australian babies and mums who need formula. We need stricter policies that are going to actually be enforced!
