James Hartman started this petition to President Joseph R. Biden and

AIDs is an extremely deadly virus that was first discovered in 1981. Since its discovery, it has killed over 34.7 million people in Africa and left another 23.8 still affected. It also continues to kill around 1 million people per year, and infect another 1.5 million yearly.

The predominant group of people who are affected by this disease are homosexuals, young women, and children. This is mainly because of lack of awareness and precaution for the virus. For instance, in Madagascar, Mauritius, and South Sudan, less than 25% of the population are aware of there status in regards to AIDs, and over 8 countries in Africa are still not reporting data on viral suppression, implying that their general awareness is far less than 25%. If people are not aware of what AIDs is and if they are infected or not, they may be subconsciously spreading the virus, as well as not receiving proper treatment for their ailment.

Another reason that AIDs in so dominant in Africa is because the lack of protection. For instance in Mauritius, only 32% of the population knows how to effectively protect themselves and others from the virus. That statistic is staggeringly low, and is a main reason why AIDs is able to spread so easily.

While many Sub-Saharan countries are struggling to contain and manage AIDs, some countries have managed to successfully battle the virus. For instance, some countries like Botswana, Eswatini, and Namibia have successfully educated at least 90% of their population on the dangers of AIDs and how to properly protect themselves. They have also 90% of their infected on treatment and have 90% of those people virally suppressed.

Our solution would be to follow in these countries footsteps and attempt to properly educate the people of Sub-Saharan Africa on the dangers of AIDs. This would be done by supporting organization such as DREAM, an organization that aims to reduce HIV and AIDs infections in young women. Another great organization is UNAIDS, which also aims at reducing HIV infections in young women. While our main goal is to educate people about AIDs, it is also important to think about prevention. Currently is a 3.3 billion condom shortage in Africa yearly. This is a major issue that needs to be addressed, since condoms are a major way that AIDs transmission is prevented. This would be done by supporting the UNAIDS which is attempting to supply more condoms to Africa.
