Nathaniel Grenier started this petition to President Joseph R. Biden and

A few weeks ago my sister got a job at a ice cream shop. Every weekend (and soon to be every day in the summer) my sister works 7-9 hours a day. Cleaning tables, mopping the floor, doing hard, honest work for hours on end. Yet, with all this hard and backbreaking work, my sister struggles to make $50 a day. Although my sister is only 17 and does not have a family to provide for or rent to pay, many people do. In fact, 43.96 million people in the United States do and struggle to live on this salary; our federal minimum wage. Right now I am taking action to raising the minimum wage, but I need your help. The people who can make this change is our representatives and senators, but we need to get their attention. We need to show them that enough people care about this issue and all the struggling families to come together and say it is time for change.

My goal is to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $15. The federal minimum wage has been sitting at $7.25 since 2009, over 11 years ago; but inflation has not been so hesitant. People are earning an outdated wage that struggles to pay for the needs of one person let alone a family. Please, come together with me and let's prove that we care; we care about the struggling families, we care about the starving children, we care about everyone who works hard all day and makes too little. We must care because the people who are appointed to make this change don't.

My solution for this problem is a federal minimum wage increase to $15 over 10 years. Although this may seem lengthy, I assure you it is necessary. Increasing the minimum wage over a long period of time allows business owners to prepare for this change. Increasing the minimum wage too fast can result in layoffs and increased prices. This is why we should take these cautionary measures to make sure we are helping as many people as possible with this.

Coming together as a community for a good cause is a noble and honorable thing. It is the principle our nation was founded on and what we should inspire to do. Every signature counts for this, so I ask you to tell your friends, family, and peers to sign as well. Together, and only together can we help others, make change, and save lives.
