Demand Justice for Emmett Till: Prosecute Carolyn Bryant for Murder Involvement
Emmett Till, a beautiful ,happy black boy that was taken too soon at the hands of a white supremacist liar. Emmett Till was born on July 25,1941 in Chicago in a one parent household. Unfortunately, he never got to meet his father due to his father dying while serving in the military during World War II. When Emmett turned five he was diagnosed with polio; he recovered. However, he was left with a slight speech impediment. Despite, these adversities Emmett remained a happy, brilliant and kind child. Emmett and his mother had a beautiful relationship , and any one who knew them would say Emmett would do anything for his mother. In fact, since Emmett's mother, Mamie Till, worked Emmett would volunteer to tend to the home to lift a load off his mother's shoulders.
In August of 1955, Emmett's Great uncle ,Moses Wright , came from Mississippi to visit some relatives in Chicago. On his way back to Mississippi, he picked up Emmett's cousin, Wheeler Parker. When Emmett heard that news, he wanted to go spend the summer with Wheeler and Moses. However, Mamie Till, Emmett's mother, had planned a vacation for her and Emmett to go to Omaha, Nebraska. She tried to persuade him to go with her by telling him on this trip she would teach him how to drive. However, Emmett's mind was already made up. The day before he left Mamie gave Emmett a ring that belonged to his father, to take with him on his trip to Mississippi. The day after, she dropped him off at the train station anxiously, as if she had a premonition that something might go wrong. Before he left she kissed him and embraced him tightly and said her Goodbye's. This was the last day she saw him alive.
On August 24th,1955 Emmett and his cousins decided they wanted some candy, and went to the Bryant's store. They were all joking around as 14 year old boys do. The owner, Roy Bryant was out on a business trip, and his wife Carolyn Bryant was responsible for managing the store. Allegedly, while the boys were there, Carolyn heard someone whistle and assumed it was Emmett who had whistled at her. Whether it was Emmett , whether someone even whistled, there is no logical explanation for a 14 year old boy to end up being murdered.A few days later when Roy Bryant returned Carolyn had lied and told her husband she was sexually harassed, and groped by Emmett. Roy believed his wife and began to feel enraged. Roy and Carolyn's brother, J.W Milam decided they were going to abduct, and kill Emmett.
On August 28th 1955, at 2:30 am the two men showed up at Moses Wright's home, held him at gun point and abducted Emmett. Wright recalled seeing a woman in the car , who most likely was Carolyn. Her suspected purpose at the scene was to help identify Emmett. These two men brutally tortured Emmett before murdering him. They forced him at gun point , to carry a 75 pound cotton gin fan to the Tallahatchie River and forced him to remove his clothes. They then proceeded to beat him to the brink of death, gouged out his eyes and later killed him with a gun shot to the head. Emmett's body was then tied to the heavy cotton gin that he was forced to carry previously, with barbed wire. This was to ensure his body would sink. When his body was recovered, he was barely recognizable. Fortunately, he was wearing the ring his mother had gifted him. Otherwise, his corpse might have not been identified. Emmett’s face and body had been mutilated and disfigured to the point that, it was advised that he should have gotten a closed casket funeral. However, Emmett's mother refused because she wanted the world to know what these heinous people did to her baby. She wanted the world to know how violent and degrading these racist evil people were . She wanted everyone to know they not only beat him , but stripped him of dignity, and then killed him.
Sadly, the two men who bludgeoned and murdered this innocent child ,despite confessing to the crime ,was acquitted by an all white jury. The two men and Carolyn became in a way celebrities, despite being cold blooded killers. The jury along with majority of the state could not care less about the crime. They were more fixated on the two men and Carolyn’s good looks. After trial , the men talked freely and smugly about how they murdered in their words “ a negro little boy” and got to maintain their freedom.
The two men are now deceased. Had they not been, they would still be protected under the Double Jeopardy Clause which prohibits someone from being prosecuted twice for the same crime. With that being said, yes, they were tried and acquitted. However ,it is not too late to seek Justice for Emmett Till. Carolyn Bryant is still alive and well. She has not been tried, despite admitting that she lied 52 years later, in 2007. Many people are trying to vindicate and defend this woman by saying she is too old now , or times were different then. Times may have been different then, but let's show how we in this country of Honor and Justice have progressed, and that we value accountability. As for her age, and how long ago this crime was committed ,there is no excuse. Nazi soldiers who are in their 90's were prosecuted and tried last year for heinous crimes they committed during World War II and rightfully so. The monster that is Carolyn Bryant should not get a pass because being organizing the abduction and murder of an innocent life, robbing a child of a future, and robbing a mother of her baby is a very serious legal crime as well as moral crime and should be handled as such. She not only had motive, she was most likely at the scene.Let's show that as a country , we have changed. Lets show that lady justice is indeed blind and the scale is balanced. Let's show that despite race, despite gender, sexuality etc everyone deserves justice. Let's stand up and do what is right. After all a mother lost her baby boy because of a lie.
