Coming in as a freshman students are expected to take Math100P or "Intro to Intermediate Algebra" if they took the exam during orientation, the results varied and many students were put into this class. This is a class that is set up for the student to either fail, or have their GPA lowered due to a bad grade. The class has Aleks, a program that is the cause of the failure in many students, or W's in their first semester. The course description for 100P is "Topics include real numbers and variables, plus linear, quadratic, polynomial, and basic rational and radical functions with graphing, word problems, and linear systems." (Course description provided by SCSU) This is true but not what a student expects walking into their class on the first day of math. Instead we are told, "Students will be required to spend five contact hours per week in the emporium, three scheduled with their instructor and two walk-in (lab) hours. MAT100P carries a faculty teaching load of three and a half credits." (Outline for course provided by SCSU) This is something students were not told coming into their freshman year, and if we cannot afford to buy the program for it, well we fail immediately, if we are behind by a few objectives, well then that student has to double up on their time in the math emporium, and if the student does not get to a certain objective on time or is behind on their hours, well sorry they cannot take the midterm or final exam. Many students have complained to faculty but because the school has invested in so much money into this program students are forced to take a class that is unneeded, and this course is only a pre-requisite to take the class needed for their major.
