A little over a year ago the city of Providence installed parking meters on Atwells Avenue. Since then stores and restaurants have noticed a dramatic decrease in business. Some businesses have reported up to 30 or 40% decrease and others have been forced to close. We have customers that come to the hill to relax, and enjoy themselves. instead they return to their vehicles with tickets on their windshields, and they tell themselves they wont be visiting Federal Hill any time soon. The signs are not visible, and the machines are not always in working order. Some of the guests visiting the hill are elderly and its just not safe in bad weather, rain, snow, for them to have to walk up to 500 yards away to pay these meters.

Meter attendants are even ticketing vehicles on streets without signs because they have been directed to.

In 2016 during the month of December the City of Providence has announced that they would not enforce the meters to promote business. If it is a benefit to not have meters in December why wouldn't it be a benefit for the other 11 months of the year?.

These meters are driving business away from Atwells Avenue, in turn having a huge affect on the small businesses that call Federal Hill home. Its become too much of a hassle and consumers have chose to go elsewhere to avoid it. This also deters new businesses from opening up.

We support the immediate removal of parking meters on Atwells Avenue, Spruce St, and any other streets in the area of Federal Hill. If the Mayor of Providence is not pro-business  and does not value the tax dollars that Atwells Avenue brings in for the City I ask you to consider this come election time!
