Mary Kibwana Kamangu is a victim of the exploitative Kafala system found in the Arab World. She died of burn injuries on July 28, 2016, after months of abuse working for a wealthy Jordanian household. Her abusers are still free. JUSTICE FOR MARY.

HER STORY:

Mary, a mother of four, migrated from Kenya to Jordan to find a job as a domestic worker in order to support her children back home. She was hired by a rich family, who took her passport and phone the moment she arrived. They subjected her to work 18-hours-a-day, and the mother and daughter in the family regularly abused her.

While making a cup of tea, a gas canister exploded, setting her on a fire. She passed out, and her boss came in and started kicking her, worsening the injuries. A neighbor heard Mary and called the police, who dismissed the situation.

She was hospitalized, but her family in Kenya were never informed of what happened to her. When her chances of survival seemed low, she was sent back to Kenya, where she died of her injuries on July 28, 2016. The story was never reported in Jordan and no arrests were made. She passed away at 30.
