Emily Forsythe started this petition to Senator Joni Ernst and

We should work to ensure that Medicare recipients in Skilled Nursing Facilities receive coverage if they need a speech-generating device. Access to a speech-generating device can help individuals with communicative disorders (e.g. persons with aphasia) socialize with others and adequately communicate their wants to family and caregivers.  Medicare’s definition of an SGD are devices that are primarily used for generating speech that ultimately provide an individual the ability to meet their functional speaking needs. Medicare currently recognizes speech-generating devices as Durable Medical Equipment (DME).

Under the classification of Durable Medical Equipment, speech-generating devices are covered by Medicare for individuals that reside in their home but they are NOT covered for individuals living in a Skilled Nursing Facility. Sign this petition urging policymakers to declassify speech-generating devices as Durable Medical Equipment so that Medicare recipients with severe communicative disorders will have equitable access to speech-generating devices regardless of the location in which they reside.
