When OneAcadia began canvasing the parish for economic opportunities it became apparent that the stretch of Louisiana Highway 35 between Rayne and Church Point needed a champion.
Residents express sincere concern regarding the travel conditions of La. Highway 35 between Rayne and Church Point, especially during rainfall. “The ruts in the road make driving hazardous on a good day. When it’s raining, recovery from driving error is a terrifying experience,” shares one concerned citizen.
Having access to major highways is among the key factors in a business’s consideration for locating in an area. Companies that utilize La. Highway 35 to transport freight have lost inventory and have had trucks rolled because of the disrepair. The expense of damaged cargo and equipment affects business costs.
As part of a connector between Interstates 10 and 49, La. Highway 35 serves as an alternate evacuation route for residents to bypass the congestion that occurs along these major thoroughfares during emergency Hurricane evacuation.
Outreach to LaDOTD and Legislative Leadership revealed they are aware of the hazardous condition. AND that a portion of this stretch is listed on their pavement preservation program for between July 2016 and 2017. Civic engagement is essential to keep it there!
“We want businesses from Rayne to Church Point to be involved in this. And we are inviting anyone throughout the parish to be part of it as well,” says Chris LeBas, OneAcadia Board member and Church Point resident and business owner. “This is a great opportunity to show what we can do when we come together, united, as a parish.”
