The Freedom Camping at Gizzy's most decorated break, Makorori is outta hand!
I'm sure we all have a opinion on this topic and if it is similar to mine, we need to remove this hazard from our iconic break. As surfers, locals and visitors we use this small park everyday.
Remember when we used to park up Maka point hill, in a chain of vehicles, on the side the road, checking the surf, catching up with friends, this was a special time in New Zealand Surfing.
With a growing economy and more traffic on the road, a guard rail was placed up Makarori hill, ending that iconic error. A new car park was established, for vehicle and personal safety at the base. Which was respectable.
However; what we now face is a unorganised, busy, dis-respectful campsite, in a 100km speed zone.
Add back to back motor homes, vans along side people movers, and you are lucky to safely attain a park.
I've seen car accidents, near logging truck misses, one child almost hit, empty bottles, rubbish, tampons, urinating in bushes, dishes and clothing washed in the ocean, vehicles parked for days on end while drying an eye sore of clothing, verbal abuse which is only getting worse and on October 31st three vans had their brake lines cut, as reported by the Gisborne Herald.
We as locals and the people of Aotearoa, need to protect what we have in our back yards, and also look after our visitors by allocating safe, user-friendly camping locations, while hopefully contributing to the local economy.
For example, support the Tatapouri camp ground just over the hill, obtain permits like most locals do at Pouwawa and beyond, or enjoy the other numerous camping spots in our area.
I'm sure our councilors such as, Larry Foster, will personally connect and agree with this korero, helping us achieve the relocation of this service.
Lets pull all of our resources together Gizzy and NZ, share and sign this petition off!
