Anonymous AMC wife started this petition to Jon Peach - Commissioner, Alexander Maconochie Centre

In March 2020, ACT Corrective Services (ACTCS) suspended social visits to the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In September 2020 visit were resumed under 'interim guidelines' that they announced 'are necessary to ensure that ACTCS meet both public health advice and workplace health and safety guidelines'.

Almost 6 months later these 'interim guidelines' are still in place, even though Canberra has recorded no community transmission cases in around 6 months. Canberra is considered a green zone and has been for over 6 months. Commissioner Jon Peach announced in his statement on 2nd September 2020 that the restrictions regarding AMC detainee visits would be eased 'in line with the easing of restrictions
in the community'. How can Commissioner Peach justify still having the restrictions in place that were set in September last year? How is that 'in line with the easing of restrictions in the community?

The lack of compassion by Commissioner Peach is appalling. There are mother's who have not hugged their son's in nearly a year. Wives who have not held their husbands hands for nearly a year. Children who are removed from visits for simply walking towards their father with their arms held out to picked up.

Are the emllpyees of AMC required to remain in self isolation when they leave the AMC? No. They are allowed to see their families without having to adhere to social distancing. So why are the detainees human rights being violated and they are not?

Please sign this petition to show your support for the Alexander Maconochie Centre resuming its normal detainee visits. Commissioner Peach said the easing would be in line with the easing of restrictions in the community, if you agree that this is not what is happening please sign this petition and stand up for this unprecedented lack of action by the commissioner.
