Fast food packaging may be seen as aesthetically pleasing because of its various forms and designs, but little do we know, these harm us and the environment in a huge scale. Fast food trash has been one of the leading sources of garbage seen in streets, and unfortunately, sometimes ending up in waterways. From cups and bottles, to wrappers and boxes, to plastic utensils and the like, garbage from fast food chains have been consistently a major component of non-recyclable wastes. As a matter of fact, fast food packaging actually make up 49% of all the trash found in the streets which are not properly disposed. According to Lehner (2015), single-use food and beverage packaging is a prime source of the estimated 269,000 tons of plastic pollution currently floating around the world's oceans, which harms marine life and also human health as well. In addition, the quantities of the plastic pollution in waterways are also drastically increasing as time goes by (Gordon, 2011).
Reducing waste even in simple ways is vital in decreasing the amount of garbage in our planet. Fast food restaurants must open their minds to the consequences of each and every decision they consider. It is essential to consistently deem and consider the state of the environment in business planning. These decisions must not only benefit the stand of their business, but it should also benefit the planet and the people in it.
This petition aims to call the attention of the fast food industry to become aware on how using food packaging and disposable utensils affect nature and the people. Moreover, this was created for businesses to consider the use of disposable material alternatives which include reusable plates, cups, utensils, and the likes.
We call out to the different fast food chains to join the 'zero waste lifestyle' and to inspire people to be part of change.
