Join the Pledge to Cut Down on Waste

The Issue

You don't have to toss all your garbage in the trash bin. The United States has over 3,000 active landfills and 10,000 closed landfills. Landfills have significant environmental and health impacts, and there are efforts we can make to reduce our waste. It will take practice, but you can help make a difference!

The people who take action to clean up and protect our rivers, lakes, and streams need all the help they can get.

SIGN THIS AS A COMMITMENT TO PROTECT OUR WATERS AND WILDLIFE from waste.

  1. Compost leftover food and organic matter. Keep a small bin on your kitchen counter where you can easily dump food scraps (fruit, vegetables, eggshells, and coffee grounds).
  2. Carry and use reusable grocery bags.
  3. Become conscious of what you're throwing out the most and if it can be recycled or reused.
  4. Replace disposable paper products with washable cloth, towels, and old T-shirts.
  5. Substitute for plastic when you can.
  6. Receive receipts and bills online to cut out mail and paper waste.
  7. Purchase a reusable water bottle you can fill up anytime.
  8. Commit to making personal care products such as soaps, toothpaste, deodorant, laundry detergent, face masks, and dry shampoo.
  9. Write your legislators to pass legislation that guarantees sufficient annual funding to land conservation programs annually.
  10. Call on state leaders to ban take-out foam cups and containers. Among the worst forms of plastic pollution is polystyrene foam (the stuff most of us call styrofoam).
