I’m signing because old houses are not accessible and new houses aren’t either! I don’t want to live in my family home for the rest of my life, I should be able to rent or buy just like able bodied people.

It makes social and economic sense. NDIS and TAC spend millions every year altering homes to make them accessible. If doorways and hallways were wider, if there were no steps at the front door, if there was a ground floor bathroom big enough to be made accessible easily, it would save so much money. Also it would make life easier for people with short term injury to be at home rather than hospital, allow the aged to stay in their homes longer. And for us, we could take our daughter to visit friends.

I am pleased to join disability organisations and others in their efforts to call on Commonwealth, State and Territory Ministers to put requirements for accessible housing in the national building code when they meet at the end of the month. Voluntary compliance has failed, we need to respond to the needs of an ageing population, designing for accessible housing is cheaper than retrofitting and this is a sensible move to keep people out of nursing homes and acute care.

Australia should be leading in design and construction for accessibility and not be the laggard it is.

I'm 51 years old and never yet lived in a home with truly appropriate access for my disability. They are too hard to find/ unaffordable.
