Jaynee Anaya started this petition to Johnston Center for Integrative Studies

My name is Jaynee Anaya, and I am a Community Intern at the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies. I want to bring Pole Fitness to my community. There are many benefits to providing more resources and activities that spark conversations about the reinvention of pole fitness as a recreational activity.

Last year, the Title IX office sponsored events that brought pole fitness to the University of Redlands. Pole fitness was an amazing and insightful event that many Johnston community members loved and supported! I aim to obtain a pole for Johnston and begin a collective that has fun pole fitness sessions, along with discourse that informs the community of how providing pole fitness for students speaks to our community values!

There are tons of recent academic scholarship out there that support the notion that the reinvention of pole dancing in the entertainment industry is happening; it is being transformed into a recreational activity with a completely different purpose than just satisfying the male gaze. Pole fitness provides an outlet for sexual or physical expression, an exercise that empowers women, and allows the generation of new meaning by providing different contexts for pole dance. Pole dance/fitness has different uses: performance, exericise, and expression. Having a pole dancing collective in Johnston will allow the practice of empowerment through the retransformation of this activity. By signing this petition, you support more conversations and activities that revolve around feminism, activism, and essentially pleasure for marginalized communities.

Whether or not you plan to utilize the pole, please show your endorsement by simply signing your name!

Thank you!
