Murphy Kay started this petition to Johnson Controls

Milwaukee's homeless population is burgeoning, with a large tent city sitting in the shadow of Johnson Control's headquarters in Milwaukee. The city of Milwaukee has many times tried to remove the tents, however, they are only putting a band-aid on the problem.

We propose the following solution: Johnson Controls, a major representative of the Milwaukee community, should sponsor a program that employs the homeless of the "tent city" in an effort to clean up the litter on our streets.

This solution targets two large problems: 1) Homelessness and 2) Litter in Milwaukee.

Ahead of the Democratic National Convention coming to the city in summer 2020, there is not doubt that the city will forcibly displace the residents of the tent city to keep up appearances. The city has also begun an initiative that fines litterbugs up to $500 for a single piece of trash. While we all agree that cleaner streets are a good thing, this flat-rate fine disproportionately affects the poor and those already on the brink of homelessness.

By allowing our homeless population the chance to earn a living, we may well be able to solve both problems. While understanding that this solution is not the end-all be-all, we also believe that this is a solution that should be at least considered by the corporations that Milwaukee supports.
