Hostile architecture is seen all across the city of Toronto. Whether it spikes on sheltered surfaces, benches made narrow/uneven to make it impossible to lie on or structures over grates, the city of Toronto is guilty of excluding homeless people from public space. Going even further, the city is regularly patrolling and destroying tent sites created by homeless people in the area. They claim to provide a spot in the local shelter, however, many shelters are full upon arrival and many homeless people state that they feel unsafe and unwelcome in Toronto's homeless shelters. Especially during the pandemic, it is factually more likely for a homeless person to catch COVID-19 in a shelter than it is for them to catch the disease on the street.

As a city that prides itself on inclusivity and hospitality, the way that they treat its homeless population isn't anything of the sort. This petition is a call to the city of Toronto and the mayor's office to stop funding projects of hostile architecture and to the Toronto police to stop their destruction of makeshift shelters. The homeless population of Toronto is growing every day and we can no longer be complicit in the discrimination against them.
