Homelessness in Canada Doesn't End With the Cold Weather

Due to the recent extreme cold weather alert, multiple emergency homeless shelters were opened around the city of Toronto. However, now that the weather is beginning to warm up, many of these emergency shelters are closing despite being at a 95% capacity. All of these warming centres are scheduled to close by April 15th 2018. Instead of opening more shelters, the city is closing them with Seaton House- Toronto's largest shelter- being next. The overwhelming use of these emergency shelters should have opened the city council's eyes to the large issue at hand, that Toronto's homeless crisis is only getting larger and that we are in need of more shelters, not less. However, instead, the city is ignoring the crisis at hand and will be shoving over 650 people back out on the streets by April 15th if nobody stops them. Signing this petition will raise awareness for the many people struggling to find a home. If we reach our goal, at least 650 permanent beds will be added to Toronto shelters, assuring a place to stay for those who would otherwise be kicked to the curb and forced back onto the streets.
