Why this petition matters

We, the undersigned, request the City of Toronto to rename Seasons Park located near the intersection of Seasons Dr & Grosbeak Cres to “Bharati Park.” Subramaniya Bharatiyar also known as Bharati, was a poet, a thought leader, a revolutionary leader, and a social reformer. He is considered to be one of the world’s greatest poets and regarded as the father of modern Tamil poetry. His work is an inspiration to many, not only in India but across the globe. His recollections beautifully capture a period of triumph, reflecting on thoughts, sensations, and philosophies that reflect our community, our humanity and the nature of our society. Uniting people politically and socially he became a beacon of light and a pioneer. Bharatiyar was a symbol of a just society, and his writing embodies principles of contemporary Canada and Toronto such as inclusion, feminism, and tolerance. The objective of renaming a park after such a historical figure is to not only pass on its cultural significance for future generations but to preserve one of the richest and oldest renowned language and history. In the light of many achievements within our quilt of diversity, we believe that Bharati certainly embodies many of the attributes we embrace in our city. His life’s work is a testament to the absolute dedication and commitment to our communities and our future leaders locally as well as globally by showing the importance of community building. It is our distinct pleasure to put forward a name that serves to unify our communities and continue to project a sharp positive image of inclusivity in the City of Toronto.
