Christine Gilbert started this petition to John Rogers

Supermarkets across the country have pledged to reduce plastic waste. Consumers are encouraged to buy loose vegetables and fruit to save on packaging, however, the bags offered at the selling point, in which to put these loose vegetables, are plastic. It is understood that this is to aid till staff to easily identify the product being bought.

Surely the responsible option would be to provide paper bags at the selling point. Till staff would have to look into the bag rather than through it, but is this such an issue? Yes paper bags can split resulting in (environmentally acceptable) waste, but plastic bags are often tossed aside because of tearing when taking from the roll, or difficulty in opening them easily.

In this day and age it is up to everyone to do their best to encourage responsibility for our world. I challenge Sainsburys to lead the way and promote the use of paper bags wherever possible in their stores.
