Dear Dabney S. Lancaster, we need change.
Dear Dabney S. Lancaster, we need change.
Dabney S. Lancaster Community College
Recently an employee of Dabney’s, , made some unsettling remarks about her sister’s husband and his new girlfriend. These remarks were racist and threatening to the individuals she was attacking. Worse, she made the people reading it feel uncomfortable enough that they sent it to her supervisor, (attached).
After reviewing Dabney’s code of ethics policy, as with an email you sent to your employees enforcing Dabney’s nondiscrimination policy, it is plain to see that Dabney cares greatly about its mission and the communities it reaches out to. With that said, it is evident that the racial messages put on Facebook go against Dabney’s mission.
The concern here is for Dabney. The area Dabney reaches is small, which means the remarks made on social media will reach many people, and unfortunately, rather quickly. This will likely affect Dabney in that people of minority statuses, no matter which one, may feel uncomfortable attending a college that will not accept them with open arms. This is especially since Dabney refused to make an comment or action to the situation.
The community Dabney serves is requesting and expecting the following: appropriate actions regarding , required ongoing training for staff, sensitivity training during student orientation, a fund specifically designated for DE&I (Diversity, Equality, & Inclusion) issues and activities, an added HR representative that will represent minorities, and a public response to how you are implementing a better future for Dabney, its faculty, and its students.
We, the community, believe you cannot change the name of the school for discriminatory reason but allow discriminatory people to be employed.
Sincerely ‘An Outraged Community’
