The concept of Daylight Savings was first tossed around in 1784 as a way to give farmers more time to work in the daylight and to save energy. When this idea was first put into action it worked quite well, but now in the 21st century farmers do not have to rely on daylight to complete their work as there are now power grids and electricity which allow them to work in any lighting condition.
Now, Daylight Savings is taking a toll on our health and safety. It is statistically proven that in the spring when we jump forward an hour there is a higher rate of car accidents, heart attacks and strokes. Another study shows that during Daylight Savings there is an 11% increase in depressive symptoms. This is because our bodies have a circadian rhythm which is similar to a clock that tells us when to carry out essential functions. Therefore, when our sleep schedule is shifted our body’s circadian rhythm is thrown off and this affects our organs and mental state. Thus, the shifting of our sleep schedule effects the health of the rest of our body.
Taking all of this into consideration, eliminating Daylight Savings is in everyone’s best interest. This is an important matter for all of us and we need to end it. So many lives would improve with this change.
