The taxes imposed on businesses and utilities for their amount of carbon emitted beyond the appropriated amounts are measured by the ton. This taxation per-ton allows companies with a lot of money to dump literal tons of carbon dioxide into the air without too much of a tax effecting them. Reducing this taxation variable to a tax per-ounce of carbon dioxide emitted would prevent any and all businesses, regardless of wealth, from taking advantage of a flawed measurement system/law. This change will not occur over night, but it can start in our community now. The more signatures on this petition for House Representative Annette Glenn and Senate Representative John Moolenaar to see will be an effective beginning to an easy fix in our state's current carbon emissions laws, only furthering what Gov. Whitmer has planned for the next thirty years.
