Compensate Precarious TDSB Employees During School Closure

Dear John Malloy, Director of the Toronto District School Board

During the COVID-19 public health emergency, it is a fundamental principle of equity that no member of the TDSB community suffer financial hardship due to the closure of our schools.

Yet as OSSTF Toronto President Leslie Wolfe has written to you earlier, "While other Boards have shown leadership in their understanding of the need for income on the part of their most precariously employed workers, the largest school board in Ontario has chosen to write these workers and their families off as deserving of nothing during the shut down period."

We, the TDSB employees signed below, are asking the TDSB to provide Daily Occasional Teachers, casually employed Child and Youth Workers, and other support staff with compensation during the school closure, based on an average of their work history in the weeks prior to the start of March break. Many employees will not qualify for Employment Insurance, in large part due to a decline in the availability of work this year. We ask that you open discussions promptly with representatives of the Occasional Teachers Bargaining Unit of OSSTF Toronto, the Occasional Teachers Unit of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario, the Professional Student Services Personnel and CUPE Local 4400 to address this issue.

Sincerely [the below signed],
