Do not white wash the black character of Shana in the new Jem and the Holograms movie? Please re-cast with a black woman that actually looks like Shana.
Shana didn’t pass the brown paper bag test. She is too dark for Hollywood.
I had foolishly hoped with the recent popularity of Lupita Nyongo the door of inclusion had been open for black women who were darker than a brown paper bag. Unfortunately I was absolutely, completely, positively wrong. Apparently there is only room for one dark skinned black woman at a time in Hollywood.
If you are an 80s kid like I am you are probably a huge Jem and the Holograms fan. If you were a young black girl you undoubtedly loved Shana. The cool black chick who kicked ass on the drums, designed the outfits for the band and rocked a purple afro. It was Shana’s signature look and style that both made her standout and fit right in with the group. Needless to say when I heard there was a movie coming out about Jem and the Holograms I was more than beside myself with glee. Happy larks have nothing on me. However, this happy flight crashed and burned quickly when I reviewed the cast. It turns out that our beloved Shana didn’t pass the brown paper bag test. She is too dark for Hollywood. She has been re-cast as more white friendly woman. The woman cast is biracial white/black so I guess Hollywood has done its due diligence. Forget the fact that black people don’t all look alike and don’t bother taking note that we all come in many shapes, sizes and hues. Don’t bother respecting the integrity of the character Shana whose signature looks are just as important as Jem or Kimber by picking girl who looks like her.
Let’s keep teaching young African American girls that only one look is acceptable in Hollywood or remind them in case they got any ideas by the recent popularity of Lupita. Only one type of black woman is acceptable in Hollywood and that’s one that looks more like white.
No brown skin black girl with a purple fro in this movie. She has been cast by a girl that looks NOTHING like the Shana we all love and remember.
Now that my friends is OUTRAGEOUS! Truly, truly, truly outrageous!
