Stop Secretary Jeh Johnson from receiving an honorary degree from Georgetown University

My Aunt died crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in the summer of 2005, trying to escape threats made on her life in Guatemala. I attended her funeral in the winter of my Junior year after her body was recovered. As a student of International Affairs in the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, I recognized that failed U.S. border enforcement policy drives thousands of immigrants, including my Aunt, to their death in the desert. I still hold the Department of Homeland Security, and now Secretary Jeh Johnson, responsible for having torn countless families apart due to increased deportations, and in my experience, a death sentence.

Georgetown University has invited Secretary Jeh Johnson to speak at this year’s Commencement and, as an alumna, I am asking that the institution rescind its invitation. He shouldn’t receive an honorary degree from my alma mater because of the human rights abuses his department is responsible for every day.

Johnson’s invitation is an insult to my family, to the myriad of Georgetown alumni from mixed-documented families, and to the undocumented students who are preparing to graduate this month. Graduation is supposed to be a safe, welcoming environment for students and families who have worked so hard to graduate, not a hostile or uncomfortable one. As a first-generation college student, I know how important completing my degree was and how important it was for my family to share that moment with me.

Will you join me in standing with immigrant students, with immigrant families, and in the loving memory of my aunt to urge Georgetown to rescind its invitation to Secretary Jeh Johnson of the Department of Homeland Security?
