Organized/Gang violence is at its all time high right now in Peel Region. The John Howard Society organization is great because it has different programs for people that have committed crimes. Many of which include supporting youth and adults that have experienced trauma, stigmas and/or prejudices because of their experiences with mental health or homelessness that resulted in them finding themselves in an entanglement with the law. They are passionate about giving people who have dealt with the law a second chance at life while assisting them in various aspects of life including: housing, education, finances, mental health, addiction, relationships, parenting, individual counselling, self-management and even employment. To add to the abundant amount of programs that the Peel-Halton justice society has to offer, the Home for Good Program provides “... wraparound support to clients who have a history of extended and repeated homelessness.” Those who take part in the program often struggle with problems related to mental health and/or addiction. Housing is one of the greater social inequality barriers for people involved with the justice system. They help these at-risk individuals “break the cycle” of homelessness and crime by providing them with homes, and accessing their critical mental health check-ups. The organization is aware that most people who spend time in jail often repeat offences. Therefore, they have further implemented the Bail Verification & Supervision Program, which creates a great process for those awaiting trial. The organization’s program provides the judiciary with a clear alternative plan for outside supervision and support. They then aid each person “... through an assessment and case management tailored to their unique needs.” Afterwards, they help offenders with areas in social life that they may struggle with (the barriers of inequalities that can lead to crime).
