Put Port o Potties in Peoples Park

In October 2016 a petition was spread around Bloomington that sent a message of intolerance and lack of support to those experiencing homelessness or poverty in our community. The petition called for “People's Park to stop being a home for the homeless”. While the petition writer claimed that he wanted certain people to leave the park, he did not give any suggestion as to where they should go. Not only is it unfair for college students who do not live in Bloomington permanently and displace those who do by making the cost of living high to abuse their privilege, but it dehumanizes those who congregate in the park and negates their personhood and community. Instead of asking “the homeless” to leave the park, our petition ask Mayor John Hamilton to have three port o potties installed in the park. Individuals who are experiencing poverty are people, and their lives and experiences are no less valuable than those of students attending Indiana University. If you agree, please sign our petition to have the port o potties installed and to bring back humanity and support to a group of people who are already marginalized everyday.
